The poem "Sympathy" by Paul Dunbar is about caged birds there not really birds trapped in cages its about people being trapped in prison trying to get freedom to get out. He comes from slave owners he usually writes about slaves are being locked up in a cell. The quote I know what the caged bird feels alas.It means he has been a caged bird and knows how he feels in his situation. The quote till it's blood is red on the cruel bars because he wanted to get out so bad that he was beating his wings. But a plea, that upward to heaven he flings he's desperate for freedom.When i connect to the poem it was bad for the caged bird and the poet felt the same way because he went through the same thing. I felt this because the poet felt the same way it was like being locked up in jail. The way the speaker feels about slavery and how he felt is he talks about sadness, blood on the bars, and he wants freedom.Paraphrasing when the first bird sings and the the first bud opens in the spring birds sing and the flowers bloom. It is not a carol of joy or glee but a prayer that he sends from his heart's deep care. This means that he is singing a sad song to help him be set free. Simile the river flows like a stream of glass.The poem is sad in some parts and angry in others he felt how the caged bird felt. The speaker seems to be getting angrier because his images are getting more violent the caged bird seems very desperate to fling a prayer upward. I understand the meaning of the metaphor caged birds here are three examples of a caged bird people in 4th period I don't like being in this class these people are to childish and some need to go back to middle School. Also people in person and School/West Jeff.

Sympathy Paul Dunbar
I know what the caged bird feels ALAS!
When the sun is bright on the upland slopes;
When the wind stirs soft through the springing grass,
And the river flows like a stream of glass;
When the first bird sings and the first bud opes,
And the faint perfume from its chalice steals —
I know what the caged bird feels!
I know why the caged bird beats his wing
Till its blood is red on the cruel bars;
For he must fly back to his perch and cling
When he fain would be on the bough a-swing;
And a pain still throbs in the old, old scars
And they pulse again with a keener sting —
I know why he beats his wing!
I know why the caged bird sings, ah me,
When his wing is bruised and his bosom sore,—
When he beats his bars and he would be free;
It is not a carol of joy or glee,
But a prayer that he sends from his heart's deep core,
But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings —
I know why the caged bird sings!
